Renovated 1928 Βungalow

Description

Into the macabre? Stay on the campus of what once was the largest mental asylum in the world. Stay in a fully renovated craftsman, 1920’s bungalow situated on the corner of a large pecan grove, across from the Central State Hospital infirmary. Walking, driving or trolly tours are available to learn all about the history of one of the nation’s oldest and largest institutions for the mentally ill. Note: Buildings are closed to the public. There are no tours inside buildings.

The space

As featured on hauntedtravelusa.com and originally known as “Georgia State Lunatic, Idiot and Epileptic Asylum, the Central State Hospital, located in Milledgeville, opened in 1842 as Georgia’s first public psychiatric hospital. Milledgeville was the first capitol in the State of Georgia. Today the campus is being repurposed with new industries taking over some of the buildings. However, much of the the property is still mostly empty and falling into decay. Two thousand acres still echo with the memory of the patients who were treated at the asylum. And you can stay on the only rental property on the entire 2,000 acre campus.

Other things to note

All of the buildings on the campus are closed to the public. Security guards monitor the campus 24×7, so please do not try to break into buildings… they will arrest you. Visit MIlledgeville offers a campus trolly tour as well as a trolly tour of historic MIlledgeville. We also provide a self-guided tour in the information packet that can be driven or ridden on the provided bicycles. .
